Transport systems are the engines of local, regional, and global economies. They constitute a pillar of modern life, connecting people, businesses, cultures, cities, and countries. Transport is also responsible for around one fifth of the globe’s carbon emissions (according to the United Nations Environment Programme) and ranks as the second-largest source of emissions in the European Union (EU), behind the energy supply sector.

Progress is being made to transition to electrified mobility powered by greener energy sources in the EU.

According to the European Environment Agency (EEA), in 2022, 21.6 per cent of new car registrations were electric vehicles, while wind and solar generated a record fifth (22 per cent) of EU electricity.

In the UK, electric cars were 16.6 per cent of new car registrations in 2022, according to SMMT, and 40 per cent – a record amount – of electricity came from renewable sources.
